The USB socket on this side of the 2510p notebook is noted to be powered but that is odd because it does not look anything like the powered usb spec.. Initially this caused concern to me because I would like to run a mouse on the other port and I understood that one might not be powered. This is not the case however, a mouse runs find off the other port.
On the other side of the 2510p notebook there is a standard PCMCIA slot and not an Express card one which is odd but nice if you have some older cards lying around. The external monitor connector is a standard VGA also not a DVI.
The 6 cell battery sticks out a bit but thats ok.
You can see the case around the touchpad was poorly assembled and is warped about 1mm because of this. The top of the case is metal, everywhere else is plastic.
The size of the notebook is very good, it is a perfect size for travel. The keyboard is full size and very nice to use. The trackpoint and trackpad are also fine. But due to the size of the display you really will have to sit in front of it to do anything. DVD playing from some distance was quite nice though.
Fingerprint Sensor.
The problem with the 2510p is not the functionality or general design which is excellent. The general spec is satisfactory also. The problem is the panel which is a LED powered Illumi-Lite one on the 2510p. Unfortunately it is very poor on this notebook. The viewing angles are extremely poor leading to the top being greatly different from the lower in general usage. Generally it is also washed out as it has poor contrast. This can be corrected somewhat by angling the screen away from the user but this is not perfectly satisfactory. In default settings the colours tend towards blue and even with tweaking the colours remain generally incorrect. There is not much settings in the vga driver for this. It is suprising that HP supplied such a shit panel with this expensive unit. The LED powered technology is a disaster really. It tends towards very blue white and not a slightly warm colour and more accurate cast as seen on other monitors. Not very nice at all for photo viewing and completely useless for image editing.
No its not that bad, just a wierd photo
The Vista business installation was shunned for a clean install of XP. This was fine using the drivers on the HP site but they did not include the ADI soundmax HD audio driver which is odd because the audio is not working after only installing the provided Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio. So the sp37155.exe was found on another site and installed fine with the audio working.
To eliminate all unknown etc devices in device manager all the drivers will have to be installed including the Intel AMT LMS-SOL, AMT MEI, Fingerprint driver etc and to eliminate the last the Infineon Trusted Platform Module (TPM) Driver would have to be installed but it was chosen not to do that.
The Intel PROSet for Intel PRO/Wireless Network Connection software was installed and found to be better than the default microsoft one.
SIM Card for authentication when the WWAN module is installed.
Slot for the WWAN module (Cellphone internet) which is not included on this GM651AW model of 2510p.
The 1.8" 4200 rpm Hard Disk. This is an important consideration as they are not available in high speeds or as high capacity as the normal 2.5" Notebook Hard Disks
Broadcom BCM9204SNMD Bluetooth Module
The single ram slot (another consideration) with Hynix 1gb DDR2 PC2-5300 667 Mhz module. To the left the 802.11a/b/g Intel WLAN module.
The Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 is a great companion to the 2510p notebook, there is no complaint about its performance and it has a blue light at the rear of the mouse which is quite attractive..
